The hair on our body’s is called vellus hair, this is the fine, short, light, non-pigmented, light-coloured or translucent hair. Better known as peach fuzz or baby hair. It can be found everywhere apart from behind the ears, eyelids, nose, lips, root sections of terminal hairs, navel, soles, scars, some parts of external genitalia or palms. Which means it can be done nearly everywhere but it’s most popular on the face.
Vellus hair helps provide insolation and helps regulate the body’s temperature and helps sweat evaporate from the body. Named as the process of perspiration. They also serve as extension’s for sensory functions of the skin like when you feel something crawling on you.
Now to clear up a myth, the hair on your face is not the same type of hair that’s on your legs as you grow older, so if you are to shave off this hair for example it does not grow back thicker and darker, women do not turn into men with beards (or so I’ve heard ha-ha) why do you ask? We are all born with vellus hair all over our body’s and as the body undergoes various changes as you become older, the vellus hair transitions into terminal hairs in select parts of the body.
For example a young boy before puberty begins has vellus hair all over his body, his face and chin, chest, pubic area etc. As puberty begins these hairs in certain areas change into terminal hair so he can now grow a beard or chest hair etc. The common areas for hair to change are face, chest, abdomen, legs, arms, pubic area and feet on men. For women its generally just pubic area, underarms and legs.
The changeover results from an increased production of a hormone called androgen during puberty, this is naturally occurring in both men and women, but males have a higher level hence why they have more terminal hairs.
Therefore, derma planning cannot change the way our hairs grow. It is perfectly safe to have this treatment the only hair that will grow back is the hair that’s already there whether that be terminal or vellus depending on the area you’re treating.
